Debbie McGee says Strictly helped her after the death of her husband Paul Daniels

Debbie McGee admitted Strictly Come Dancing helped her find a new lease of life after the tragic death of her husband, magician Paul Daniels in 2016.

The star, 63, who was her husband’s ‘glamorous assistant’ during their magic shows, was married to him for 28 years until his death from a brain tumor at age 77.

The beauty, who was partnered with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, revealed her time dancing on Strictly in 2017 made her come out of her shell again.

She told Hello! magazine: ‘I had the best partner in Giovanni, and I was back in show business again. People knew who I was before, but I was still the magician’s assistant. Since Strictly I’ve been Debbie McGee in my own right.’

During the BBC celebrity dance competition’s 15th series Debbie reached the final and later won the Christmas special in 2019.

The star explained how she worked through her loss and ‘built a bigger life around her grief’

She added:What grief counselors tell you is that it’s not that time heals, but that you have to build a bigger life around your grief. And that’s how I feel. I had this amazing life with Paul, and going through all this stuff reminds me of everything we did.

I led a princess life. Usually if you’re in a double act, when one partner goes, the other one struggles. The strength of the two has gone.’

Debbie revealed she is going to auction off several of Paul’s magic possessions as she feels she ‘doesn’t need to hang onto them’ because she has so many memories.

The star married Paul in 1988 and first noticed a change in him in 2015 when they were performing in panto together.

Debbie was by Paul’s side when he passed away and said that she held his hand and told him she loved him at the end.

Debbie’s story was told to charity Brain Tumor Research in 2017 and has been released for the first time with her permission to raise awareness.
