One of the beautiful and/or unfortunate things about being in the carpet cleaning industry is that I often find myself being called upon by my friends and family.  Not that I mind, er much, anyway.  The problem lies with those who want to take advantage of my generosity.  Thankfully, those people seem to be few and far between.

Just because I happen to own a cleaning company doesn’t mean that I can just drop whatever I’m doing and run to your aid when you spill that monster glass of merlot that you probably shouldn’t have been drinking anyway.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against drinking.  But, when you’ve already had a bottle of vino yourself, probably a good time to call it a night.

The sugar headache/hangover the next morning is probably enough to make sure that you won’t ever do that again anyway.  I digress…

The crazy question is, why is it that red wine always seems to spill on light colored carpet?  It’s akin to peanut butter toast always hitting the floor peanut butter side down when it’s dropped.  Strange how that always seems to happen.

So, holiday weekends typically signify times to party.  The extra day of recovery always seems to bring out the inner college student in my friends.  This past Labor Day was no exception.

I got a frantic call from someone we’ll call Susie in Cedar Rapids.  She sounded like she was three sheets to the wind.  Once I got her to stop crying, I got her to explain that her favorite area rug ended up meeting a full glass of red wine and the end result was something of a horror scene.

Since I don’t live in the City Of Five Seasons (or City Of Five Smells as it is also affectionately known), she wanted to know what I would do if I were in here position.

One thing that is cool about being a business owner is that we almost always know other business owners.  I do have a rather large network of reliable carpet cleaners across the US.  All I had to do was check my PDF doc for a local carpet cleaning service (I happen to have them organized alphabetically by city, go ahead and laugh).  And, yes, I do have this document stored in the cloud so it is accessible anywhere I have internet access.  Trust me, it has come in handy on more than one occasion.

I hooked her up with Henry at A-1 and “Susie” couldn’t have been more pleased.  She said that you can’t every tell where the spill was and that the “red out treatment” she received was spectacular.  Crazy thing is that he has been in business so long that “Susie” told me he has actually cleaned the carpets in her entire house prior to her becoming the homeowner.  She’s been the owner since 2000!

It’s times like that that put a smile on my face for the good ‘ol boys that are still in business for the right reasons.  I hate seeing people go into business strictly because they see dollar signs.  Eventually, the market seems to flush out those posers, but not before they reek havoc on some unfortunate people.

Well, that’s about it for now.  I’m gearing up for football season.
I’m stoked because, well pro football is awesome, and it’s also a busy time for my business as people often gather inside to enjoy the games as the weather forces them from chilling out on their patios.

Wow, I thought that it was Fall already.  Boy, was I wrong.  The weather cooled off and I’m pretty sure nearly 90% of everyone nearby was opening their windows at night to let the cool breeze in.  Problem is this is when most people have some serious allergy issues, myself included.

Pollen counts can skyrocket overnight and simply having your windows open at night is more than enough to illicit an allergic response in most people.  Have carpet in your home and you can bet that those microscopic grains of pollen will stick to the fibers that keep your feet warm in the winter.

What’s the best thing to do?  Find a reputable carpet cleaning company that uses steam extraction to clean your carpet.  Many of the newer truck-mounted systems are capable of whisking away nearly all of the common allergens, which will keep your sneezes to a minimum, your nose from running, and your eyes from itching.

While professional carpet cleaning can be somewhat expensive depending on your area and the amount of carpet your home contains, many will argue that not having to deal with being miserable due to allergies is well worth the cost.  Try to schedule regular professional carpet cleaning services and see how much better you feel.  You’ll likely be amazed (and sickened) by the amount of junk that gets pulled out of your carpets.

Another plus is that most children these days seem to deal with some sort of respiratory issues on a regular basis.  Be it asthma, reactive airway disease, or allergies, there is no question that the incidence of these conditions has been on the rise for years.  There can be many reasons for this, and regular carpet maintenance will undoubtedly alleviate the majority of acute respiratory cases that people struggle with.

I’m sure there is some study out there that can back me up on this.  I’ll have to root around on the ‘ol interwebs and see what I can find to substantiate my claim one of these years.

In the meantime, check out this video that I found online:
